Mo Designs - Sebha Bead Ring

A reimagined concept for the traditional muslim sebha counter.

Design Statement : Counting praises and prayers for muslims has historically been done on a bead chain (Sebha) in an action called (Tasbeeh) or praising God. Sebha chain with its valuable stones have been part of the culture and by essence the religion itself. The key intent of the Sebha is to take the burden of counting the number of Tasbeeh targets (typically 99 after each of the 5 prayers a day), to ensure one doesn't over or under count. Sebha Bead Ring reinvents this iconic tool, in a wearable and technological way, while maintaining the originality of the bead stones.

Idea : Sebha Bead Ring brings the same benefits of the traditional Sebha Chain and adds much more. Sebha Bead Ring offers the user Tasbeeh activity while being Tangle-free, as the original chain tends to tangle often. That is achieved while maintaining the cultural factor and historical depth of the Sebha stones, which is a significant aspect of the Sebha history richness and depth. Leveraging modern wearable technology, which will be appealing to the younger generation and user groups. Through the app & IOT, sharing progress via the mobile app will transform the activity from an individual user experience to a group experience.

Form : Sebha Bead Ring form is the shape of a ring, after some form research and many prototypes to land on this form. The ring form balanced the comfort, compactness and the usability via smooth flow of beads across the finger tips. An important factor to maintain was the stones from the original Sebha chain. As it is considered to be the essence of the device, and has historical value in the richness of the product, especially when being offered as a gift to a special someone.

Function : Sebha Bead Ring achieved the functionality desired by creating a continuous and endless flow of beads that moves inside the circular ring, the ring frame encapsulates the beads within and acts as a container for the electronic parts that counts the motion of the beads to achieve the reading and sends it to the mobile app via Bluetooth. Ten stones are layout with one stone gap for the finger tip to fit comfortably during the counting process, with thirty three LED lights that signifies one third of a cycle, which is synonymous with the Sebha chain sections, every cycle is 99 counts, split into three sections of 33 beads.

Differentiation : Sebha Bead Ring is the first Sebha device to merge the technology of an electronic wearable device with the authenticity of the real bead stones used in traditional sebha chains. The various color combination opportunities between the ring color and bead colors leads to endless options for the users to customize and illustrate their uniqueness in many ways (i.e. similar to iPhone and iPhone Cases model).

Impact : Sebha Bead Ring connects families and friends vs. the traditional sebha, now the Tasbeeh activity will be a social activity where users will set personal targets and track via the app their progress, and celebrating achieving said targets with loved ones and friends (i.e. similar to Nike Running app) .
